Wheelchairs FAQs
What features should I look for in electric wheelchairs?
Assuming you are looking into buying a new wheelchair and not a used
one, it is best that you try to make sure that you are going to find
a wheelchair that includes a joystick that features several functions.
While all joysticks will go front and back and left and right, there
are some nicer kinds of joysticks and controllers that are also able
to elevate the seat, elevate legs and tilt the seat back and forward.
If you can find an electric wheelchair that has these features, you
should be in good shape.
Will my insurance pay for an electric wheelchair?
While only your insurance company can accurately answer this, there
are many insurance companies that require certain criteria before they
will cover an electric wheelchair. Many insurance companies require
that you, the user, be unable to use your arms or hands in a way that
would allow you to easily use a manual wheelchair. Often you have to
have a test done by a doctor to show that you do not have significant
strength for a manual wheelchair in order to have the insurance company
buy an electric wheelchair for you.
Why have I noticed more accessibility accommodations in recent
years?
The Americans with Disabilities Act was approved in 1990. Written in
five titles, it protects all Americans with disabilities from discrimination
in the areas of public services and public transportation; public accommodations
and commercial facilities; telecommunications; and miscellaneous provisions
relating to Section 504 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
