Wheelchairs Ramps
Mandating the construction of wheelchair ramps and other
physical accessibility requirements is one of the most important things
that came from the disability rights movement as well as the Americans
with Disabilities Act in 1990.
Along with wheelchair ramps, gates made especially for those in wheelchairs
and wheelchair elevators are also important. For the most part, those
who use wheelchair ramps are not looking for special treatment. Rather,
they are simply looking to be able to be afforded the same opportunities
that others have.
Sometimes it is necessary that things be added to existing structures.
Helps like wheelchair ramps or elevators are helpful because they allow
people in wheelchairs (or with canes, crutches or other devices) to
use a particular building that they otherwise may not be able to access.
In many hotels, rooms that cater to those who are in wheelchairs exist
as well. These rooms often include extra large bathroom and shower areas.
They also include larger doorways that a wheelchair can easily roll
through.
In the United States, most new construction must be built to be ADA-compliant.
This often includes the building of wheelchair ramps and other items.
Many public transportation devices like buses and trains now also are
better equipped to accommodate those passengers who might be in wheelchairs.
These wheelchair ramps are appreciated by those who need them in order
to board the train or bus.
