Portable Wheelchairs

Portable wheelchairs are not likely what you want to buy for someone in need of a permanent wheelchair.

For example, you often will see portable wheelchairs at hospitals. They are used for patients who are having trouble getting around or for women who are in labor. These wheelchairs differ in design from the wheelchairs that people use as permanent wheelchairs.

The biggest difference between portable wheelchairs and other wheelchairs is the fact that the portable wheelchairs have smaller wheels. Regular wheelchairs are often used indoors and outdoors, and have large rear wheels.

Most portable wheelchairs used in hospitals include smaller wheels that do not need to be able to get over any certain obstacles. These chairs are usually just rolled flat to transport patients from one area of the hospital to the next.

Some things to look for if shopping for portable wheelchairs:

• Durable frame – The best frames are triple-chrome plated and are made of a long-lasting carbon steel.

• Good upholstery – The best upholstery will be flame-retardant, mildew and bacteria-resistant, and will resist UV damage from the sun.

By finding portable wheelchairs that include all of these aspects, you will be able to better accommodate those who need to use these chairs.
