Electric Wheelchairs

Electric wheelchairs have evolved quite a bit in recent years. Because of this, they are being used more often by some who have physical ailments that makes standard wheelchairs hard to operate.

Some models of electric wheelchairs are designed specifically for indoor use or outdoor use. There are some models made to be used in any environment. The people who use these types of chairs most often are those who (in addition to leg issues) have difficulty using their hands, shoulders, or arms to propel themselves.

Often, people who have upper body strength prefer not to use electric wheelchairs. Because the exercise they can do is limited, they sometimes look at electric wheelchairs as being even more restrictive. Also, insurance companies often do not cover the expenses associated with electric chairs if the person is able to operate a manual chair.

People with these problems operating manual chairs appreciate electric chairs because they are operated by the user utilizing a joystick. Many people who have suffered from injuries that left them paraplegic, find this to be helpful since the strength in their arms is also affected sometimes.

The controller is the most delicate as well as the most expensive part of these wheelchairs. The reason for this is because they are usually fairly sophisticated and must be precise. These controllers allow the person in the chair to tilt, recline, elevate legs, elevate the seat, and do other things that are necessary to improve comfort and health.
